BEng Engineering with Business
About this course
Engineering with business is a programme designed for students who want to combine technical engineering knowledge with the commercial and managerial understanding that allows engineers to work effectively in organisational contexts and to lead complex projects and enterprises. Engineers who can think in both technical and business terms are in significant demand, whether as project managers who understand the technical work their teams are doing, as entrepreneurs who can build technology-based businesses, or as senior engineers who can communicate across the boundary between technical and commercial functions. At Brunel University London, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year and a year abroad, giving you both additional academic preparation and international experience. The degree is essentially an engineering programme with a strong business theme, developing the general scientific, mathematical and technical skills needed to understand engineering designs and systems alongside key management skills, business model development, entrepreneurship, financial management, accounting and project management. The breadth of the engineering education gives you analytical tools and techniques applicable across a wide range of sectors and engineering contexts. Graduates of engineering with business programmes are competitive across a range of roles in which technical knowledge and commercial or managerial capability are both valued. Project management, technical sales, product management, engineering consultancy, business development in technology companies, and general management in engineering or manufacturing organisations are all natural career directions. The business component also opens routes into management consultancy, financial analysis in technology-heavy industries and roles in early-stage technology companies where both technical and commercial skills are needed. Postgraduate study in engineering management, business administration or a specialist engineering discipline is a further option.
