BA English and French
About this course
English and French is a degree that spans two of the most significant literary and linguistic traditions in the world. English literature encompasses a body of writing that has been shaping cultural, political and personal life for centuries, from the earliest Anglo-Saxon texts through the Renaissance, the Romantic and Victorian periods to the diverse and global writing of the contemporary era. French brings access to one of Europe's richest intellectual and literary traditions, as well as to the Francophone cultures of Africa, the Caribbean and beyond. At Queen's University of Belfast you will study Anglo- and Francophone literatures and language in the widest possible sense, exploring texts from the earliest writings to contemporary Irish, British, French and postcolonial literatures and examining them in their historical, cultural and ideological contexts. Language modules develop your understanding of how each language is structured and used in everyday life and in the media, as well as the major historical forces that have shaped both linguistic traditions. The programme runs over four years full time. Graduates of English and French are valued across a wide range of careers. Publishing, journalism, education, the civil service, arts administration, the media, communications and the wider cultural sector all offer relevant pathways. The language competence in French opens additional opportunities in European organisations, international business, translation and interpreting, and any role that requires engagement with Francophone cultures and institutions. Postgraduate study in English, French, translation, creative writing or cultural studies is a natural further route for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
