About this course

English and psychology is a combination that develops two complementary ways of understanding human experience: through the analysis of literature and language, and through the empirical study of mind and behaviour. English brings with it skills in close reading, critical interpretation and the construction of arguments about meaning. Psychology adds the scientific methods of observation, experiment and statistical analysis to the study of how people think, feel, perceive and act. Together, they cultivate both creative and analytical capacities, producing graduates equipped to engage with human complexity from multiple perspectives. At the University of Derby, this three-year programme is designed to develop your creative and analytical abilities in tandem. You will study a broad range of psychological theory and research, developing empirical and statistical skills alongside your understanding of human behaviour, while also engaging in close analysis of literature, exploring a range of texts, periods and genres. A sandwich placement year provides substantial professional experience, and the programme includes work placement opportunities throughout, enabling you to develop a portfolio of professional experience before you graduate. Graduates from English and psychology programmes enter careers across a wide range of fields. The psychological training supports pathways into counselling, social work, human resources, research assistance, mental health support work and education, while the English dimension is valuable in communications, marketing, publishing, journalism and content creation. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study, including conversion programmes in psychology leading towards professional practice, or postgraduate work in creative writing, literary studies or education. The degree's combination of empirical rigour and humanistic interpretation is increasingly valued in careers that require both analytical depth and the ability to communicate clearly and compellingly.
