BA English and Spanish
About this course
English and Spanish is a degree that develops expertise in two of the world's most significant literary and cultural traditions. English offers access to one of the richest bodies of literature in any language, from medieval texts to contemporary fiction, and it trains close reading, critical argument, and sensitivity to how language creates meaning. Spanish opens the literatures, cultures, and intellectual histories of Spain and the Spanish-speaking world across Europe and Latin America, one of the largest linguistic communities on earth, with a tradition of writing that spans the novel, poetry, theatre, and essay in distinctive and influential ways. Studied together, the two literatures illuminate each other, revealing different ways of imagining social life, justice, identity, and the human condition. At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year, full-time degree develops your analytical and communicative skills across both subjects. You will read widely in English and Spanish literature, developing your ability to interpret complex texts and to write about them with precision and argument. In Spanish you will also develop genuine linguistic competence, building toward fluency through the combination of language classes and literary and cultural study. The degree develops the written and verbal communication, analytical thinking, and broad creative intelligence that employers across many sectors value in graduates. Graduates from English and Spanish degrees work in publishing, journalism, education, translation, international business, the civil service, diplomacy, cultural organisations, and communications. The combination of literary analytical skill with Spanish fluency is particularly valued in international and bilingual contexts. Teaching and translation are common destinations, and the degree provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in English literature, Hispanic studies, translation, education, or international relations.
