BA English
About this course
English at King's College London is one of the most distinguished programmes in the country, offering a curriculum that ranges across medieval performance and early modern drama, Romantic poetry and Victorian fiction, global literatures in English, and contemporary writing and creative practice. The degree takes seriously the idea that English is a living and evolving discipline, not a fixed canon, and the range of optional modules means you can shape your studies around the themes and periods that most interest you. At King's, you will study English over three years full-time, developing the skills of close reading, critical analysis, and sustained written argument that the discipline demands. You will engage with texts in their historical and cultural contexts as well as on their own terms, learning to read across genres and periods and to situate your interpretations within the broader traditions of literary criticism and theory. The BA combines a strong literary and historical breadth with the opportunity to develop a personal specialism, and creative writing is offered as part of the curriculum for those who want to engage with English from the practitioner's side as well as the critic's. The typical entry tariff is 168 UCAS points. English graduates from institutions with research reputations like King's go on to a wide range of careers. Journalism, publishing, law, the civil service, broadcasting, arts administration, marketing and communications, teaching, and academic research are all common destinations. The analytical and communicative skills the degree develops, the capacity to read carefully, think critically, and write with clarity and precision, are valued across virtually every professional field. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in English, creative writing, education, journalism, or related disciplines.
