BA English Language And English Literature
About this course
English language and English literature together offer two complementary approaches to the study of English that illuminate each other in genuinely productive ways. English literature develops your capacity to read and interpret literary texts with care, attention to craft, and awareness of cultural and historical context. English language uses the tools of linguistics, including grammar, phonetics, discourse analysis, and sociolinguistics, to examine how English works as a system and how it varies across users, contexts, and time. Studying both gives you a richer understanding of each: language awareness deepens your reading of literary style and technique, while literary sensitivity enriches your engagement with how language creates meaning in context. At Bangor University, this three-year full-time programme is taught by specialists in both disciplines, giving you rigorous engagement with each. You will study literature across periods and genres alongside the formal structures of English, its historical development, and its social and regional variation. The programme includes a foundation year that provides a supported entry before the main degree, along with a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement, making this a structurally rich programme that gives you professional experience and international exposure alongside the academic content. Graduates from English language and literature programmes go on to careers in publishing, education, journalism, communications, public relations, copywriting, the civil service, and the creative industries. The combination of analytical reading, rigorous writing, and linguistic awareness the degree develops is valued across many professional sectors. Further study options include postgraduate degrees in English literature, linguistics, education, creative writing, and publishing.
