BA English Language
About this course
English Language as a degree-level discipline is distinct from literature, though the two are closely related. Where literature focuses on texts and their meanings, English Language turns its attention to the system of language itself: how it is structured grammatically and phonologically, how it varies across regions, social groups, and contexts, how it changes over time, how it is acquired by children and learnt by adults, and how it functions in conversation, media, and professional communication. It is a discipline that gives you rigorous analytical tools for understanding one of the most fundamental aspects of human life. At the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, this three-year full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in the study of the English language from multiple perspectives. You will explore linguistics at the level of sounds, words, sentences, and discourse, examine how language varies across dialects and social contexts, study language acquisition and development, and analyse how English functions in media, advertising, politics, and everyday conversation. The programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, providing substantial opportunities to gain professional and international experience alongside your academic study. The placement and work experience give you the chance to apply your communication and analytical skills in real professional contexts, while the year abroad broadens your linguistic and cultural perspective in ways that are increasingly valued in a globally connected world. Graduates in English Language go on to careers in teaching, journalism, copywriting, speech therapy (often via further study), communications, publishing, advertising, public relations, market research, and many other fields where a precise understanding of language is an asset. The analytical and writing skills the degree develops are broadly valued across professional life. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in linguistics, applied linguistics, TESOL, speech and language therapy, or related fields. The combination of linguistic expertise and professional experience that this programme provides is a strong foundation for a wide range of careers.
