About this course
English language as an academic discipline is quite different from studying English literature. Rather than focusing primarily on literary texts, it examines language itself: how it works as a system, how it varies across contexts and communities, how it changes over time, and how it shapes and is shaped by thought, identity, and society. Language is a fundamental part of what makes us human, and studying it rigorously requires discipline, observation, and imagination in equal measure. The three-year full-time English Language programme at the University of Salford gives you a thorough grounding in linguistics and language studies. You will explore the structure of language at phonological, grammatical, and semantic levels, and study how language functions in social contexts, from conversation and discourse to gender, power, and identity. You will examine language acquisition, language variation across regions and social groups, and the ways in which language in public life, including political speech, media, and advertising, constructs meaning and influences attitudes. The University of Salford has a particular strength in applied and professional linguistics, and the programme equips you with analytical tools that are relevant well beyond academic study. With a typical entry tariff of 104 points, the programme is accessible to a wide range of students and provides a strong foundation for both further study and professional practice. Research methods are central to the curriculum, and you will develop the ability to design and carry out original linguistic enquiry. Graduates from English language programmes work in teaching and education, speech and language therapy pathways, journalism, communications, media, publishing, and public relations. The analytical and communication skills the degree develops are highly transferable, and many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in linguistics, applied linguistics, English language teaching, or related fields.
