English Literature and History is a combination that goes to the heart of humanistic inquiry, bringing together the study of how people have imagined and expressed experience through literary form with the rigorous investigation of how the world has actually changed over time. The two disciplines are in constant dialogue: literature is a historical artefact, shaped by the social, political, and economic conditions of its moment, while history is itself a form of writing, a narrative art that involves selection, interpretation, and the shaping of a past into something that can be told and understood. Studying both gives you a richer and more critical engagement with each than either alone provides. At the University of Huddersfield, this three-year full-time programme develops your expertise in reading literature and analysing historical evidence within a university that places considerable emphasis on the practical and professional dimensions of a humanities education. You will read fiction, poetry, and drama across a range of periods and traditions, developing your skills in close reading, textual analysis, and critical argument. In History you will work with primary sources, engage with historiographical debates, and develop the capacity to construct well-evidenced arguments about the causes and consequences of historical change. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement, connecting your academic studies to professional contexts where the skills of analysis, research, and clear communication are directly applicable.
