About this course
English Literature and Politics might seem like an unusual pairing at first, but the relationship between the two has always been intimate. Literature has long been a space where political ideas are tested, contested, and humanised; and politics needs the analytical and rhetorical skills that literary study develops. Reading a novel about totalitarianism alongside a political theory text on power is a different kind of education from either alone, and it is one that prepares you to engage with the world through multiple forms of understanding. At Liverpool Hope you will study canonical and contemporary literature alongside the institutions, concepts, and history of political life. Literary study trains close reading, sensitivity to language and form, and the ability to hold complexity without reducing it. Politics develops your capacity to analyse institutions, systems of governance, policy debates, and political theory, giving you frameworks for understanding how power operates at every level from local government to international relations. The programme is offered over four years full-time, includes a year abroad and a sandwich year with work placement, and these elements give you both an international dimension and direct professional experience before you graduate. Liverpool's own cultural and political history provides a rich backdrop for both subjects. Graduates of this combination are well equipped for careers in journalism, the civil service, political research, public affairs, communications, teaching, publishing, and the voluntary sector. The dual skillset of careful reading and political analysis is particularly valued in roles involving policy, advocacy, and written communication. Many students go on to postgraduate work in politics, literature, education, or law.
