About this course

English literature and business and management might appear to be an unusual pairing, but the combination produces graduates with a distinctive set of capabilities that are genuinely valued in the modern workplace. Literature trains you to read deeply, to understand how language shapes meaning and how texts reflect and influence the cultures that produce them. Business and management develops your understanding of organisations, markets, strategy and leadership. Together they build intellectual range and the capacity to move between analytical and humanistic ways of understanding the world. At Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme gives you the time to develop both disciplines to a high standard. In the literature strand, you will explore writing in English from early modern to contemporary periods, engaging with American, Irish and postcolonial literatures alongside critical theory, creative writing and the relationship between literature and other arts and media. In the business strand, you will study the core disciplines of management, including strategy, finance, marketing and organisational behaviour, developing a grounded understanding of how businesses and institutions function. A year abroad is included in the programme, giving you international experience and the opportunity to study in a different cultural and academic environment. Graduates of this combined degree go on to a wide range of careers. The communication, critical thinking and cultural awareness developed through literature are assets in marketing, publishing, media, public affairs and human resources. The business knowledge opens doors in management, consulting, finance and entrepreneurship. Many graduates work in sectors where both sets of skills are relevant, including the creative industries, cultural institutions, international business and the not-for-profit sector. Further study in literature, business, law or management is a natural option.
