BA English Studies and Spanish
About this course
English Studies and Spanish is a degree that combines one of the richest literary traditions in the world with one of its most widely spoken languages. English Studies encompasses the critical analysis of literature in English across periods and genres, developing close reading, interpretive, and argumentative skills alongside a broad knowledge of how English-language writing has developed and what it has done in the world. Spanish gives you access to a living language spoken by hundreds of millions of people and to a literary tradition as rich and varied as English itself, from Cervantes and Lorca to Garcia Marquez and contemporary Latin American fiction. At the University of Stirling, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, during which you will spend extended time in a Spanish-speaking country, building linguistic fluency and cultural immersion that deepens your engagement with the literature and culture you have been studying. You will develop your Spanish to a high level of proficiency through language classes and literary study, while also working through major texts and movements in English literature, developing the critical vocabulary and analytical habits of mind that humanities training at its best produces. The year abroad is a significant period of personal and intellectual development as well as linguistic advancement. The combination of literary critical depth and Spanish language competence is valued across many sectors. Graduates move into careers in publishing, teaching, journalism, translation and interpreting, cultural institutions, public relations, the media, and international business. The analytical and communication skills developed on the degree are strong assets in any role that requires clear thinking and effective expression. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in English literature, Hispanic studies, translation, or cultural studies.
