BA English
About this course
English as an undergraduate degree is far broader and richer than the subject you studied at school. At university level, it encompasses literary history from the earliest texts in the language to the most recent fiction and poetry, critical theory, the analysis of language and style, and engagement with some of the most important cultural and intellectual debates of the past and present. It is a discipline that trains you to read with precision, to argue with clarity, and to express complex ideas in well-crafted prose, and these capacities are among the most transferable that any degree can develop. At the University of Huddersfield, this three-year, full-time programme engages you with English literature and language across a substantial range. You will study texts from different periods and genres, developing the ability to read closely and to situate literary works within their historical, social, and cultural contexts. You will encounter a range of critical and theoretical approaches, developing the capacity to apply different analytical frameworks and to argue persuasively about competing interpretations. The programme also develops your own writing, both critical and creative, and builds the research skills needed for independent academic inquiry. Huddersfield has a strong tradition of combining intellectual ambition with practical relevance, and the English programme reflects that orientation. This programme includes a sandwich year with a work placement, giving you the opportunity to apply your skills in a professional context and to develop the real-world experience that employers across many sectors value. English graduates work in publishing, journalism, education, communications, advertising, the civil service, law, management, arts administration, and a wide range of other fields. The skills in reading, analysis, argument, and writing that the programme develops are among the most broadly applicable of any humanities degree. Further study at postgraduate level in English literature, creative writing, or publishing is also a well-established route.
