MA English
About this course
English as an academic discipline is the study of language, literature, and culture in their fullest complexity, tracing the development of writing in English from its earliest forms to the present and asking what texts mean, how they work, and what they reveal about the societies and minds that produced them. It is a discipline that takes both the pleasure and the difficulty of reading seriously, demanding close attention to language and form alongside the intellectual and historical range to situate texts within the contexts that shaped them. At the University of Dundee you will study this four-year full-time programme, gaining insights into the historical, critical and cultural contexts of writing from the early modern period to the present day. The four-year structure allows for greater depth and range than a three-year degree, and the programme includes a year abroad, which gives you the opportunity to study in a different literary and cultural environment, deepening both your knowledge and your perspective. Across the degree you will develop skills in close reading, research, critical analysis, and writing, building the kind of sustained intellectual engagement with texts that is at the heart of English studies. You will encounter a wide range of authors, genres, periods and critical approaches, developing your own critical voice as you progress. English graduates are consistently sought after by employers who value the communication, analytical, and critical thinking skills the degree develops. Careers in education, publishing, journalism, arts administration, copywriting, public relations, the civil service, broadcasting, and the heritage sector are common destinations. Many graduates also enter law, finance, marketing, or management, where the ability to write clearly and think critically is a significant advantage. Postgraduate study in English literature, creative writing, cultural studies, library and information science, or education is a natural progression for those who wish to develop their expertise further.
