About this course

Environmental science is an integrative discipline that applies the tools of biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science to understand the natural systems that support life on Earth and the ways in which human activity is changing them. From the geochemical cycles that regulate the composition of the atmosphere and oceans to the soil science that underpins food production and the hydrology that determines how water moves through landscapes, environmental science addresses systems of extraordinary complexity and interconnectedness. Understanding these systems is essential for addressing the environmental challenges of our time. At the University of Plymouth this three-year full-time programme takes you on a journey to discover Earth's essential natural resources, including minerals, soils, and water. Through engaging laboratory experiments and insightful data analysis, you will explore geochemical cycles and processes to develop a deep understanding of the linkages between Earth systems and our changing climate. A foundation year is available for students who would benefit from additional preparation, and a sandwich year and a year abroad are incorporated into the degree, with a work placement built in, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your studies. Environmental science graduates are in demand across environmental consultancy, water management, resource industries, government environmental agencies, conservation organisations, and research. Roles include environmental consultant, hydrogeologist, soil scientist, water quality analyst, sustainability officer, and environmental impact assessor. The interdisciplinary nature of the degree prepares graduates for the complexity of real environmental problems, which rarely fall neatly within a single scientific discipline. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in environmental science, geochemistry, hydrology, or a related field, deepening their technical expertise and preparing for specialist or research careers.
