About this course

Environmental science is the study of how natural systems work and how human activities are changing them. It draws on biology, chemistry, earth sciences, geography, and ecology to examine the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere as interconnected systems, and it asks what the consequences of pollution, land use change, biodiversity loss, and climate change will be for those systems and for the human societies that depend on them. The discipline is driven by some of the most urgent problems the world faces, and its graduates are needed across science, policy, industry, and the voluntary sector. The University of the Highlands and Islands offers this five-year full-time programme with a year in industry integrated into the degree. UHI's location in the Scottish Highlands gives it an extraordinary environment for environmental science education: you will study in a landscape of mountains, freshwater systems, peatlands, coast, and marine environments that are among the most ecologically significant in the UK. The five-year programme allows you to develop genuine depth of scientific knowledge alongside the practical skills of fieldwork, monitoring, data analysis, and scientific communication that the discipline requires, and the year in industry gives you the opportunity to apply your scientific understanding in a professional context before completing the degree. Environmental science graduates are in growing demand as the seriousness of the environmental crisis becomes clearer. Career paths include roles in environmental consultancy, ecological survey and assessment, conservation, sustainability management, water and waste management, environmental regulation, and government agencies such as NatureScot and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. The year in industry experience is often decisive in securing graduate employment. Postgraduate study in environmental science, ecology, or sustainability is available for those who want to specialise or pursue research, and the Highlands setting gives UHI graduates an unusual depth of field experience in upland, freshwater, and coastal environments.
