About this course

Environmental sustainability and geography together address one of the most important questions facing human society: how can we live on and with the planet without destroying the systems that support us? Geography provides the broad disciplinary framework, examining the relationship between human societies and the physical environment across a range of scales and contexts. Environmental sustainability focuses that framework on the pressing challenges of our time: climate change, biodiversity loss, resource depletion, pollution, and the transition to more sustainable ways of organising energy, agriculture, transport and urban life. At the University of Dundee, this four-year full-time degree examines the interaction between people and their surroundings in rigorous and applied ways. You will study both physical and human geography alongside a sustained engagement with environmental sustainability theory, policy and practice. The programme explores how natural resources are used and managed, how human activities shape and are shaped by environmental conditions, and how more sustainable lifestyles and systems can be designed and achieved. A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to study in another academic environment and to develop an international perspective on how sustainability challenges are understood and addressed in different contexts. You will develop strong analytical and research skills, fieldwork competence, and the ability to work with both quantitative and qualitative evidence. The programme prepares you to engage with environmental questions at a scientific, social and policy level. Graduates move into environmental management and consultancy, sustainability roles in business and the public sector, planning, conservation, environmental policy, NGOs, research, and a wide range of organisations where environmental expertise is increasingly central. Postgraduate study in environmental science, sustainability, geography, or planning is a well-supported pathway.
