BA European Studies (Spanish pathway) with a year abroad
About this course
European Studies combines the analysis of European history, politics, society and culture with serious language study, producing graduates who understand the continent with both intellectual depth and genuine linguistic fluency. Spain and its global Spanish-speaking sphere offer a particularly rich subject of enquiry, encompassing a complex political history, a distinctive literary and artistic tradition, and a language spoken by hundreds of millions of people across multiple continents. Studying the Spanish pathway within European Studies means engaging with these dimensions together, rather than in isolation. At King's College London, this four-year programme gives you the opportunity to learn about the politics and history of Spain while developing the language skills needed to engage with that subject on its own terms. You will build analytical frameworks drawn from history and political science, explore cultural and social questions through contemporary and historical sources, and develop your Spanish to a high level of proficiency. A year abroad is central to the degree: you will spend a year studying at a partner institution where you will be taught and assessed in Spanish, immersing yourself fully in the language and gaining a depth of understanding that classroom study alone cannot replicate. You will graduate as a Spanish speaker and an expert in European Studies, with the cross-cultural competence that entails. Graduates from European Studies programmes with a language component are sought after in roles that require international perspective and communication skills. Common destinations include the civil service and diplomatic service, international organisations, law, finance and consultancy, journalism and media, and non-governmental organisations working across borders. Many graduates also pursue careers in education or go on to postgraduate study in European politics, international relations, translation or area studies. A high level of Spanish fluency is itself a significant professional asset in a wide range of fields.
