BA Fashion Design: Menswear
About this course
Fashion design with a specialism in menswear addresses a distinctive and historically complex area of the fashion industry. Menswear has its own traditions, codes, technical requirements and cultural dynamics, and the best menswear designers understand both the craft of tailoring and construction and the cultural significance of how men dress, which has changed substantially in recent decades. Contemporary menswear operates across a broad spectrum from tailored suiting and workwear to streetwear, sportswear, luxury ready-to-wear and experimental fashion, and it requires designers who can work across these registers with confidence and originality. At the University of the Arts, London, this four-year full-time degree is part of the Fashion programme at one of the world's most prestigious fashion education institutions, which has produced many of the most significant figures in contemporary fashion. You will develop your design skills within the specific context of menswear, studying garment construction, pattern cutting, fabric knowledge, design research, the history and culture of menswear, and the professional and commercial dimensions of working in fashion. The programme has a dynamic studio culture that expects creative ambition alongside technical rigour. A sandwich year placement and a work placement are built into the programme, giving you professional experience in menswear design, fashion houses, or related creative businesses and helping you to build the industry relationships that matter in this competitive field. You will develop a portfolio of menswear design work that demonstrates your creative vision, research depth and technical capability, and you will engage with the professional culture and contemporary debates of the fashion world throughout your studies. Graduates from UAL's menswear programme move into menswear design, styling, buying, product development, fashion direction, and a wide range of roles in the international fashion industry. The institution's reputation and its connections with the industry are significant assets.
