BA Fashion Design
About this course
Fashion design is a discipline that sits at the intersection of art, craft, and commerce. It asks what clothing means, how it is made, and how it communicates identity, culture, and desire. Fashion designers draw on drawing, pattern cutting, textile knowledge, and garment construction alongside an understanding of the industry's business structure, market dynamics, and the cultural forces that drive trends. It is a demanding and competitive field, and succeeding in it requires both creative vision and rigorous technical skill. At Southampton Solent this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, extending the overall period of study to four years and giving you the preparation you need before entering the main degree. You will work in specialist fashion studios, developing skills from tailoring to streetwear construction, and your creative and technical capabilities will be nurtured through practical experience across a range of garment types and design contexts. The typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points. The programme aims to develop designers who are both creatively ambitious and technically accomplished, ready to translate original ideas into garments that work. Graduates from fashion design programmes pursue careers as designers, pattern cutters, fashion illustrators, stylists, textile designers, and buyers. The broader fashion and retail industries also employ graduates in visual merchandising, fashion journalism, and product development. Some graduates establish their own labels or work as independent designers, building portfolios and client bases over time. Others find careers in costume design for theatre, film, and television, where the technical skills developed in fashion design are directly applicable. Postgraduate study in fashion design, fashion communication, or textiles is a route taken by those who wish to develop a particular specialism or pursue academic or research-based careers.
