BA Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear
About this course
Fashion design technology for womenswear is a discipline that sits at the intersection of creative design, technical garment construction, and the commercial realities of the fashion industry. Designing clothing is not simply an artistic act: it requires understanding how fabric behaves, how garments are constructed to fit and move with the body, how collections are developed from concept to production, and how design decisions translate into manufacturable, commercially viable products. The womenswear specialisation focuses specifically on the history, culture, aesthetics, and technical demands of designing for women, one of the most creative and competitive areas of fashion. At University of the Arts London, this three-year full-time programme is taught at one of the world's most prestigious institutions for art and design education, in a city that remains one of the global centres of fashion. You will develop your design practice, your pattern-cutting and technical skills, and your understanding of textiles, construction, and the fashion industry, building a portfolio of work that demonstrates your creative and technical range. There is the opportunity to study abroad for a semester or on a short-term basis during the summer, subject to meeting requirements, which broadens your perspective on fashion in different cultural contexts and gives you the kind of international network that is particularly important in this global industry. With a typical entry tariff of 136 UCAS points, this is a competitive creative programme at a globally respected institution. Graduates enter the fashion industry as womenswear designers, pattern technologists, garment technologists, fashion buyers, trend forecasters, brand developers, and creative directors, working for fashion brands, retailers, manufacturers, and design studios. Some establish their own labels, while others move into fashion journalism, styling, education, or fashion marketing. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in fashion design or related disciplines.
