BA Film and Television Production
About this course
Film and television production is a practical creative discipline that develops the knowledge and technical skills needed to create engaging visual stories for film and television drama, documentary, and live TV production. It trains you to work across the full range of production roles, from development and scriptwriting through production management, camera operation, lighting, sound, and directing to editing and post-production, developing both individual craft skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in the team-based environments that all professional film and television production requires. At York St John University, this part-time programme gives you access to specialist film and television production equipment including TV studios, HD cameras, lighting, and a range of film and TV location equipment, supporting you to develop your creative film and TV-making abilities in a well-resourced and professionally oriented environment. You will learn to create content across drama, documentary, and live television formats, developing the creative vision and technical competence needed to contribute to professional productions. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placements are all available as part of the programme, giving you direct professional experience in film or television production settings and an international perspective on the screen industries. Graduates pursue careers as directors, producers, production managers, camera operators, editors, sound designers, writers, and post-production specialists across television, film, streaming, digital content, documentary, advertising, and corporate video production. Many graduates work across several roles in a portfolio career, while others specialise in a particular area of production as they develop experience. Some continue to postgraduate study in film, screenwriting, or television production, and others move into broadcasting, arts management, or media education.
