MA Film and Visual Culture
About this course
Film and visual culture at Aberdeen takes you on a fascinating and distinctive journey through the history and theory of the moving image over the last 100 years of cinema, situating film within the broader landscape of visual culture that includes photography, television, digital media, and visual art. Cinema studies has long been one of the most intellectually generative areas of the humanities, bringing together aesthetic theory, cultural history, psychoanalysis, semiotics, gender and postcolonial studies, and the analysis of the global film industries. Visual culture extends this analytical toolkit to the wider world of images, asking how visual media shape perception, identity, and culture. At the University of Aberdeen, this four-year full-time programme is studied in the vibrant environment of a leading teaching and research university with a buzzing regional cultural scene, in a region of outstanding natural beauty and artistic inspiration. You will develop rigorous skills in film analysis and criticism, exploring the history of world cinema, key filmmakers and movements, theories of spectatorship and representation, documentary and experimental film, and the politics of the image. A year abroad is part of the programme, giving you the opportunity to engage with film studies in another country and broaden your cultural and cinematic horizons. With a typical entry tariff of 184 UCAS points, this is a competitive programme at a well-regarded research university. Graduates pursue careers in film journalism and criticism, broadcasting and media, arts and cultural programming, film festivals and distribution, arts education, heritage and archive work, museum and gallery work, digital content creation, documentary production, and the academic study of film and visual culture. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in film studies, media studies, cultural studies, or creative practice, building on the critical foundations the degree provides.
