BA Film (Extended Degree)
About this course
Film encompasses an extraordinary range of creative, critical, and professional practices. At one end it is an art form with a history of a century and a quarter, producing works of enduring cultural significance. At the other it is an industry, encompassing production, distribution, exhibition, archiving, criticism, and an ever-growing array of digital and online content. Studying film means engaging with both dimensions: developing the ability to analyse and interpret moving images critically, and building the practical skills to participate in the industries that make them. At the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, this four-year extended degree provides a comprehensive preparation for employment across the screen industries. The extended format, taking place over four years rather than three, gives additional depth and development time. You will engage with filmmaking as a practice, exploring camera, editing, sound, and storytelling, alongside film criticism and theory, digital content creation, film festival programming, and archival curation. This breadth reflects the reality of screen industry employment, where graduates move across different roles as their careers develop. The programme includes a sandwich year with placement and a year abroad, giving you extended professional experience and international exposure during your studies. Graduates are prepared for careers across the screen industries, including film and television production, digital content creation, streaming and distribution, film criticism and journalism, festival programming, curation, and archiving. The comprehensive range of skills the programme develops means that graduates can adapt as the screen landscape continues to evolve, moving across formats and roles as opportunities emerge. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in film, screen studies, or related creative and media disciplines, while others establish independent production practices or work freelance across multiple areas of the industry.
