BA Film & Media
About this course
Film and media studies examines the moving image in all its forms and the broader mediascape in which it operates. Film has been the dominant popular art form of the twentieth century, and its languages, histories, and industries repay serious intellectual attention. Media studies extends that inquiry to television, radio, digital platforms, journalism, advertising, and the social media environments that now shape how enormous numbers of people receive information and entertainment. Together they form a discipline equipped to address some of the most pressing questions about contemporary culture, communication, and power. At the University of Stirling this four-year full-time programme develops your analytical and critical skills across both fields. You will study film history and theory alongside the broader contexts of media production, regulation, audience research, and digital transformation. The degree benefits from Scotland's distinctive media environment, including the growing Scottish screen production industry. The course includes a year abroad, giving you the chance to study film and media from an international perspective and to engage with different national cinema and media traditions. The typical entry tariff of 184 points reflects the competitive academic standard expected. You will develop skills in close analysis of texts and productions, historical and theoretical contextualisation, and research and critical writing. These are transferable capabilities of real value in the creative industries, journalism, communications, and beyond. Graduates pursue careers in film and television production, broadcast journalism, digital content creation, media policy, advertising, public relations, arts and cultural programming, and education. Postgraduate study in film studies, media and communications, journalism, or screen production is a common next step for those who want to specialise or move into research.
