BA Fine Art Mixed Media with Foundation
About this course
Fine art mixed media is a practice that refuses the constraints of a single discipline. Rather than working exclusively in painting, sculpture, photography, or digital media, mixed media artists draw freely from the full range of materials and approaches available to them, following their ideas wherever they lead. This openness is both a creative freedom and a serious intellectual challenge: it demands that you develop a coherent artistic voice while remaining open to experimentation and aware of the conceptual traditions that give your choices meaning. At Westminster this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year, which builds your technical skills, introduces you to art history and theory, and helps you discover the materials and approaches that will sustain your practice through the degree. Once in the main honours programme, you will develop your own creative vision through studio practice, critical reflection, and engagement with contemporary art and ideas. A sandwich year and work placement are built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to experience professional creative environments and develop the connections and confidence that working artists need. Westminster's London location places you at the centre of one of the world's great art scenes, with galleries, studios, and creative industries all within reach. Graduates from fine art programmes pursue careers as practising artists, often building careers that combine studio practice with teaching, community arts work, arts administration, or commercial creative roles. Many go on to postgraduate study at MA or MFA level, developing their practice and positioning themselves for academic, curatorial, or professional careers. Others move into adjacent creative fields such as set design, illustration, art direction, or film production, drawing on the visual intelligence and creative rigour their degree has built.
