About this course

Fine art is the practice and study of making visual art, the most open-ended and self-directed of all creative disciplines. It does not ask you to design for a client or produce to a specification but to develop your own visual thinking, your own practice, and your own relationship to the histories and contexts that art inhabits. The question at the centre of fine art is always: what matters, and how do you make it visible? At the University of Brighton this three-year full-time programme develops you as an artist through sustained studio practice, critical and contextual study, and regular engagement with the work of other artists across history and in contemporary culture. You will explore a range of materials, processes, and approaches, developing the technical skills and conceptual thinking that allow you to make work with intention and depth. Critical and contextual studies develop your ability to situate your practice within the history of art and within contemporary debates about what art is and does. Tutorials and critiques develop your ability to reflect on your work, to receive and apply feedback, and to articulate your intentions clearly. The programme includes a sandwich year with a work placement, giving you experience in a professional arts context, whether as a studio assistant, gallery worker, arts educator, or in another role connected to contemporary art. Graduates go on to careers as practising artists, gallery curators and managers, arts administrators, art educators, community arts practitioners, and creative professionals across a wide range of fields. Brighton's vibrant arts scene and the university's connections to the professional art world provide relevant contexts and networks. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in fine art or in related professional areas such as curatorial practice.
