BSc Forensic Investigation
About this course
Forensic investigation is the application of scientific and analytical methods to the investigation of crime and other legal matters. It sits at the intersection of natural science, law, and criminal justice, asking how physical evidence is collected, preserved, analysed, and presented in ways that meet the evidentiary standards of the legal system. Forensic investigators work with trace evidence, biological material, digital data, documents, and scene examination to reconstruct events and support the pursuit of justice. This three-year full-time degree at the University of Winchester combines scientific training with engagement in real-world criminal justice practice. A distinctive feature of the programme is the Justice Project, which gives you the opportunity to work on cases where the appeals system has been exhausted, contributing to actual criminal justice work rather than simply academic simulation. You will gain experience in full crime scene examination, learning to collect and document evidence under conditions that mirror professional practice. The programme develops your skills in forensic science methods, evidence analysis, report writing, and the legal context in which forensic evidence is used, building the combination of scientific rigour and professional awareness that the field requires. Graduates of forensic investigation programmes go on to careers in forensic science providers, police forces, the National Crime Agency, border force, coroners' services, private investigation, and litigation support. Some graduates join the legal system in roles such as legal research or evidence management, while others move into scientific roles in related fields such as environmental analysis, pharmaceutical testing, or laboratory management. The practical experience embedded in this programme, particularly the Justice Project work, strengthens graduate profiles considerably. Postgraduate study in forensic science, criminology, or a specialist scientific field is an option for those who want to deepen a particular expertise.
