Forensic psychology applies the methods and theories of psychological science to questions that arise within legal, criminal justice, and investigative contexts. It examines why people commit offences, how psychological factors influence behaviour in legal proceedings, how offenders can be assessed and treated, and what effective rehabilitation looks like in practice. The field demands both a solid grounding in psychological research and an understanding of the legal and ethical frameworks within which forensic work takes place. At the University of Sunderland, this four-year, full-time programme includes an integrated foundation year, which provides a supported and thorough introduction to university-level study. The foundation year is designed for students who are returning to education, who did not quite meet the entry requirements for direct first-year entry, or who want a more gradual route into the demands of degree study. From that point, you will study the core areas of psychology alongside the specialist knowledge of forensic contexts, covering topics such as the psychology of criminal behaviour, offender profiling, witness testimony, risk assessment, and the role of psychologists in courts, prisons, and community settings. A sandwich year and work placement opportunities are integrated into the programme, giving you hands-on experience in forensic, criminal justice, or related professional environments before you graduate. Graduates go on to careers in the criminal justice system, including probation, the prison service, youth offending teams, and victim support. Many proceed to postgraduate training in forensic psychology, clinical psychology, or counselling, working towards chartership with the British Psychological Society. Roles in social care, policing, research, and public policy are also common destinations for graduates whose analytical and interpersonal skills are valued across the public and voluntary sectors.
