Forensic science applies scientific methods to the investigation of crime, providing the physical evidence on which criminal justice decisions depend. At the University of Kent, the BSc Forensic Science is a three-year full-time programme that develops rigorous scientific knowledge and practical laboratory skills alongside the specific expertise in forensic analysis and expert witness work that professional forensic scientists require. As the current description notes, you will study trace evidence, ballistics, and DNA analysis alongside training in delivering expert witness testimony and exploring the legal and ethical dimensions of forensic work. The programme covers the scientific foundations that forensic work draws on: chemistry, biology, and the physical sciences as they apply to the analysis of material evidence from crime scenes. Trace evidence examination, including the analysis of fibres, glass, paint, soil, and other transferred materials, is a core forensic skill, as is the interpretation of bloodstain patterns and the analysis of ballistic evidence. DNA profiling and its role in criminal investigation is a central topic, alongside the statistical interpretation of DNA evidence and the way in which it is presented and challenged in court. The expert witness dimension of the programme is particularly important: forensic scientists must be able to communicate the significance and limitations of their findings clearly to juries, judges, and legal professionals, and understanding how courts work and how forensic evidence is scrutinised is part of professional competence. Forensic science graduates work in forensic laboratories operated by the police, government agencies, or private forensic service providers, as well as in the defence sector, where independent scientific expertise is required to challenge prosecution evidence. Roles in forensic chemistry, biology, toxicology, digital forensics, and crime scene investigation are all accessible to graduates. Some graduates move into adjacent scientific careers in pharmaceutical analysis, environmental testing, or quality control. Others go on to postgraduate study in forensic science or specialist scientific disciplines. Kent's programme, with its emphasis on expert witness training and the legal dimensions of forensic work, prepares graduates for the realities of professional practice in the criminal justice system.
