BA French and Beginners' Russian
About this course
French and Russian together make for a genuinely formidable linguistic and cultural combination. French is one of the world's major languages, spoken across five continents and the language of some of the most important writing in philosophy, literature, and political thought. Russian is the language of Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, and a tradition of thought that shaped the twentieth century, spoken across an enormous geography and still of central geopolitical importance. At the University of Oxford you will develop high-level proficiency in both languages over four years full time, beginning Russian from scratch and building on your existing French. The programme combines rigorous language training with the study of literature, film, history, and cultural and intellectual life in both French-speaking and Russian-speaking contexts. You will read primary texts in both languages, engage with scholarly debates about how literature and culture work, and develop the skills of close reading and sustained argument that are central to the humanities. Oxford's tutorial system means intensive, regular engagement with expert tutors, close feedback on your written work, and frequent practice in developing and defending arguments under intellectual pressure. The programme is demanding, but the depth of engagement it requires produces graduates with linguistic fluency and analytical confidence that is genuinely difficult to match. Graduates go on to careers in diplomacy, international organisations, journalism, publishing, academia, translation, business in francophone and russophone markets, law, and the civil service. The combination of two major world languages and the analytical habits developed by the programme is highly valued in many professional contexts. Many continue to postgraduate study in French, Russian, or comparative literature.
