BA French and German
About this course
French and German is one of the most natural pairings in the modern languages curriculum. The two languages together cover the linguistic heartland of western continental Europe, and the cultures, histories, and literatures they carry have been in dialogue with each other, and in competition, for centuries. French carries an extraordinary literary and philosophical heritage, is spoken across multiple continents, and retains major diplomatic and institutional significance globally. German is the most widely spoken first language in Europe, carries a scientific and philosophical tradition of enormous depth, and is central to understanding European history in its full complexity. Studying both gives you a command of two of the world's most important European languages alongside a serious engagement with the cultures they express. At University College London, this four-year, full-time programme develops advanced language proficiency in both French and German alongside deep immersion in the literary, cultural, and historical worlds they represent. You will move through language learning from advanced to near-native levels, studying grammar, translation, oral communication, and written expression, while engaging analytically with literature, film, and cultural texts from both traditions. UCL's French and German departments are among the strongest in the UK, and the programme benefits from a faculty engaged in research at the highest level in both areas. Studying in London means access to cultural institutions, events, and communities connected to both the French-speaking and German-speaking worlds, and UCL's international environment makes language practice and cultural engagement natural extensions of your academic study. Graduates work in translation and interpreting, diplomacy, international business, finance, journalism, law, education, and a wide range of other fields where communication across cultures is valued. Postgraduate study in translation, European studies, law, or area studies is common for those wishing to specialise further.
