MA French and German
About this course
French and German together represent two of the most significant languages in Europe, and studying them in combination is one of the most compelling options available to a language student. French is spoken by over 275 million people worldwide, serves as an official language of international organisations including the United Nations and the European Union, and carries a philosophical and literary tradition that has shaped Western thought from Descartes and Voltaire through to existentialism and structuralism. German is the most widely spoken language in central Europe, the language of Goethe, Schiller, Kant, and Beethoven, and the working language of one of the world's largest and most significant economies. At Aberdeen this five-year full-time programme brings together two highly rated subjects, developing specialist language skills alongside the cultural, literary, and academic knowledge that serious modern language study requires. You will develop fluency in both French and German, reading and engaging with literature, film, cultural history, and intellectual traditions in both languages, and building the ability to operate professionally in environments where either or both are used. Aberdeen's modern languages provision has a strong research culture that enriches teaching and gives you exposure to current work in both fields. The five-year structure, longer than many language programmes, reflects the depth of training required to develop genuine mastery in two major languages simultaneously. Graduates in French and German find careers across the European and international employment market in areas that value bilingual competency and cultural understanding. International business, diplomacy, the European institutions, translation and interpreting, journalism, education, publishing, and cultural management are among the most direct destinations. The competitive advantage the combination provides, as Aberdeen notes, is genuine: graduates with high-level proficiency in two major European languages are rare and attractive to a wide range of employers. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in French, German, translation, European studies, or related fields.
