MA French/Theology & Religious Studies
About this course
French and theology and religious studies is a combination that pairs the linguistic and cultural depth of one of the world's major languages with one of the most ancient and contested areas of human inquiry. French opens access to a rich literary and intellectual tradition, to contemporary Francophone cultures across Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean, and to a country where debates about secularism, religion, and identity have been among the most publicly significant of recent decades. Theology and religious studies asks what it means to study religion as both a set of truth claims and a cultural phenomenon, engaging with sacred texts, religious practice, philosophical theology, and the historical and sociological study of how religions have shaped and been shaped by the societies in which they exist. At the University of Glasgow, this five-year full-time programme allows you to engage with a wide range of topics within French, including French comics, song, travel writing, medieval France, and contemporary French history, while also developing a serious academic engagement with theological and religious questions. You will study biblical texts and their interpretation, the history of Christianity and other world religions, philosophical theology, ethics, and contemporary debates in religion and society. The programme includes a sandwich year in industry and work placement opportunities, both of which give you professional experience in contexts relevant to one or both strands of the degree before graduation. A typical entry tariff of 232 points reflects the demands of this intellectually ambitious combination at one of the UK's leading universities. Graduates work in education, faith communities, international organisations, journalism, translation, heritage, and a wide range of roles where linguistic ability and cultural and theological understanding are both valuable. Postgraduate study in French, theology, or religious studies is a natural next step.
