MA Gaelic/Business and Management
About this course
Scottish Gaelic and business management is a combination that connects one of Scotland's heritage languages to the commercial and organisational skills needed to support the communities, institutions and industries in which Gaelic is a living presence. Gaelic has experienced a significant revival in Scotland, with growing investment in Gaelic-medium education, broadcasting through BBC Alba, arts and cultural organisations, and community development in the Highlands and Islands. This has created real professional demand for people who combine genuine Gaelic language ability with the business and management skills to work effectively in these contexts. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad and develops your Gaelic language skills from your current level through to a high level of proficiency, alongside exploration of Scottish Gaelic culture through the centuries to the present day. Business and management modules develop your understanding of strategy, marketing, finance, operations, entrepreneurship and organisational behaviour, giving you the commercial framework that Gaelic cultural and community organisations, as well as the wider economy, require. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to deepen both your language ability and your cultural and historical understanding in a Gaelic-speaking environment. Graduates from this programme are well positioned for careers in Gaelic-medium education, BBC Alba and other broadcasters, Gaelic arts and cultural organisations, community development, tourism, public sector bodies in the Highlands and Islands, and commercial organisations with significant Gaelic-speaking customer bases. The business management strand also opens more general careers in management, marketing and consultancy. Further study in Gaelic language and culture, Scottish studies, education or business is an option for those who want to deepen a specialism.
