MA Gaelic/Mathematics
About this course
Gaelic and mathematics is an unusual pairing that brings together the study of one of Scotland's indigenous languages and its rich cultural heritage with the discipline of formal mathematical reasoning. Scottish Gaelic has been spoken in Scotland for over a thousand years and remains a living language of cultural, literary and community significance, supported today by active revival efforts in education, broadcasting and public life. Studying it seriously means engaging with the language's structure, its literature through the centuries, and the social and historical forces that have shaped its fate. Mathematics, meanwhile, is the discipline of exact reasoning about abstract structures, a subject of remarkable intellectual depth whose applications extend across every area of science, technology, finance and data. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time degree follows the Scottish Honours structure, giving you a broad educational foundation before specialising. In Gaelic you will develop your language skills, read literature from across the centuries of the Gaelic tradition, and examine the cultural and historical context of the language in Scotland. In mathematics you will cover analysis, algebra, calculus, statistics, differential equations and other core areas, developing rigorous mathematical thinking and problem-solving ability. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution. Typical entry is around 216 UCAS tariff points. Graduates from this combination have a distinctive profile. The mathematics opens doors in data science, finance, actuarial work, research and any quantitative profession, while Gaelic expertise is valued in education, broadcasting, Gaelic arts and media organisations, heritage and community development. Many graduates enter teaching, where the combination of mathematical and linguistic expertise is particularly well suited to Scottish secondary education. Further study in mathematics, Celtic languages, education or Gaelic arts is available for those who wish to specialise further.
