MA Gaelic/Mathematics
About this course
Scottish Gaelic and mathematics is a combination that brings together two fields with very different characters: one the custodian of a living minority language and a rich cultural heritage, the other one of the most universal and abstract intellectual disciplines. Scottish Gaelic is the Celtic language of the Scottish Highlands and Islands, with a literary and oral tradition stretching back over many centuries, and it remains a living language spoken in communities across Scotland. Mathematics is the language of quantity, structure, space, and change, a discipline that underpins science, engineering, economics, computing, and many other fields through its precision and the power of its methods. At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme allows you to study both subjects while managing other commitments. Glasgow hosts one of the leading centres for Gaelic language and culture in Scottish higher education, and the Gaelic strand of the programme allows you to explore Scottish Gaelic language and culture through the centuries to the present day, developing your language skills for contemporary professional contexts. The current description notes the programme's dual English and Gaelic framing, reflecting its genuine commitment to the language as both the subject of study and a medium of learning. In mathematics, you will cover the core areas of the discipline, developing rigorous analytical and quantitative skills alongside the ability to construct and evaluate mathematical proofs and arguments. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution and engage with Gaelic or Celtic studies and mathematics in a different academic environment. Graduates with Gaelic and mathematics pursue careers in Gaelic-medium education, broadcasting and media, cultural organisations, and the public sector in Scotland, as well as in the wide range of roles that mathematical training supports, including finance, data analysis, computing, research, and teaching. The combination is rare and distinctive, particularly well suited to careers in Scotland's Gaelic-speaking communities and institutions. Postgraduate study in either discipline supports those with research or specialist professional ambitions.
