About this course

Games design is a discipline that sits at the intersection of visual art, interactive storytelling, and technical craft. It is one of the fastest-growing creative industries in the world, and serious games design education goes well beyond learning software: it asks you to understand why games work, how player experience is constructed, and how visual, spatial, and mechanical decisions all contribute to something someone wants to engage with and return to. At Cumbria you will develop both creative vision and technical capability across three years of full-time study. From the outset you will work on the art and design of games, building a professional portfolio that combines traditional skills such as drawing and concept art with advanced techniques in 3D modelling, texturing, and game engine work. You will use industry-standard software in dedicated design facilities, creating playable prototypes that test and demonstrate your ideas. The programme also develops the collaborative and communication skills that professional game development demands: you will learn to pitch ideas, work within teams, and understand the production pipeline that takes a concept from early sketching through to a finished playable product. Critical study of game design history and theory runs alongside the practical work, giving you the analytical vocabulary to evaluate what you and others make. Graduates of games design programmes work across a wide range of roles in the games industry and beyond. Game artist, concept artist, UI designer, level designer, and art director are among the most direct paths, and the portfolio-led nature of the degree means you enter the industry with demonstrable work rather than just a qualification. The visual and technical skills you develop are also valued in adjacent fields such as animation, film production, virtual reality, and interactive media. Some graduates go on to postgraduate study in games design, digital arts, or related fields, while others find that the combination of creative and technical training opens doors in advertising, education technology, and product design.
