BA Games Design
About this course
Games design is a discipline concerned with the architecture of interactive experiences: the rules, systems, mechanics, narratives and environments that make games engaging, challenging and meaningful to players. It brings together design thinking, storytelling, programming, visual art and an understanding of player psychology, recognising that a well-designed game is not merely technically accomplished but genuinely pleasurable to play. As games have grown into one of the largest entertainment industries in the world, the demand for designers who can think creatively and rigorously about interactive experience has become significant. At York St John University, this three-year programme explores how design, storytelling, art and coding come together to create unique and memorable games. You will learn to develop games from concept art through asset creation, animation and level design, as the university describes, building practical skills across the full production pipeline. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work placements, providing structured opportunities to develop professional experience and international perspective alongside your studio work. You will build a portfolio of playable projects throughout your studies, which is the primary way games design graduates demonstrate their capability to potential employers. You will study game mechanics and systems design, narrative and world-building, game history and theory, user experience, prototyping and testing, as well as practical production skills in industry-standard software. The degree develops creative ambition alongside the technical and analytical rigour that game development demands. Graduates go on to work as game designers, level designers, narrative designers, user experience designers, producers and project managers in games studios ranging from large commercial developers to independent teams. Skills in interaction design and systems thinking also open opportunities in adjacent fields such as educational technology, simulation and virtual reality experience design. Further study at masters level in games design or a specialist area is an option for those interested in deepening their expertise.
