BEng General Engineering with Science Foundation Year
About this course
General engineering with a science foundation year is a degree that provides both an accessible academic entry route and a broad introduction to the engineering disciplines before students choose a specialisation. Engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical knowledge to the design, creation and improvement of systems, structures and processes that serve human needs. General engineering at degree level develops the foundational skills shared across mechanical, electrical, civil and other engineering specialisms, allowing you to understand the connections between these fields before deciding where your deepest interests lie. At Lincoln, this four-year full-time programme includes a science foundation year and a sandwich year with a work placement. The foundation year builds the mathematical and scientific foundations needed for degree-level engineering study, and is particularly suited to students who need additional preparation or who are approaching engineering from a non-traditional background. The programme was founded in collaboration with Siemens, a major industrial partner, which gives it a practical and industry-connected character from the outset. You will develop core engineering knowledge across multiple disciplines, working with the tools, methods and problem-solving approaches that professional engineers use, and the sandwich year and work placement give you structured professional experience in industry. The philosophy of the School of Engineering at Lincoln is one of research-led teaching, reflecting a belief that the engineers of the future need to be highly skilled, creative professionals who can adapt to new challenges and deliver sustainable solutions. Graduates work across engineering sectors and roles, including mechanical, electrical, manufacturing and systems engineering. The broad engineering foundation and the professional experience accumulated through the sandwich year prepare you well for a wide range of entry-level engineering roles and for further specialisation at postgraduate level.
