MA Geography and History
About this course
Geography and History is a combination that gives you two powerful and complementary ways of understanding the world. Geography examines how the physical and human dimensions of the earth interact, from climate systems and landforms to cities, migration, geopolitics and environmental change. History examines how human societies have changed over time, examining the events, forces and decisions that have brought the world to its current condition. Studied together, they give you both spatial and temporal frameworks for understanding the world, developing an unusually broad and integrated analytical perspective. At the University of Dundee this four-year full-time degree allows you to explore both human and physical geography alongside a broad historical education. You will have the opportunity to specialise in human geography, physical geography or a combination of both, with fieldwork and collaboration with partner organisations forming part of the geographical curriculum. The history side will develop your skills in research, source analysis and historical argument across a range of periods and themes. The degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to develop your studies in an international context. Graduates from Geography and History degrees go on to careers in urban planning, environmental management, heritage, education, local government, international development, policy research, journalism and the civil service. The analytical, spatial and historical thinking the degree develops is valued across virtually every sector that requires understanding of how places and societies change over time. For those wishing to continue their studies, the degree provides strong preparation for postgraduate work in geography, history, urban planning, environmental management or heritage studies.
