BA Geography Fast-track
About this course
Geography at degree level is a discipline of unusual breadth, spanning the physical processes that shape the planet and the human activities that transform it. A fast-track geography degree compresses the learning of a standard programme into a shorter period, making it an option for students who want to progress quickly or who are re-entering education with existing knowledge and experience. The discipline develops both quantitative and qualitative skills, ranging from GIS and spatial data analysis to ethnographic fieldwork and policy analysis, and it produces graduates who are comfortable thinking across the natural and social sciences. At the University of Gloucestershire, this two-year, full-time degree covers both human and physical geography, with a strong emphasis on practical, small-class learning. When you are not in the field you will spend much of your time in specialist geography teaching facilities, applying analytical and technical skills to real geographic questions. Fieldwork is a central part of geographic education and features prominently throughout the programme. The two-year structure means the pace is necessarily demanding, and the degree rewards students who are motivated and well organised. Graduates from geography programmes work in planning and urban development, environmental consultancy and management, geographic information systems, international development, local government, public policy, teaching, and research. The breadth of the discipline is its defining professional advantage: geography graduates can engage credibly with environmental, social, and spatial dimensions of a problem simultaneously, which is increasingly valued in a world where the most pressing challenges cut across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Postgraduate study in geography, planning, environmental science, or development studies is a natural continuation for those who want to build specialist expertise.
