BSc Geography (Human and Physical) with Foundation Year
About this course
Geography combining Human and Physical approaches is a degree that refuses to reduce the study of the Earth to either its physical processes or its human dimensions alone. Physical geography examines the landscapes, climates, ecosystems and geological processes that shape the surface of the planet, while human geography explores how people organise themselves spatially, how societies respond to and modify their environments, and how place, resource and inequality interact at scales from the local to the global. The unique value of geography is precisely its capacity to hold both perspectives simultaneously, connecting natural science with social science in ways that neither discipline achieves alone. At the University of Keele, this four-year full-time programme includes an integrated foundation year for students who need additional preparation before progressing to degree-level content. You will gain a deep understanding of Earth's landscapes and environments while discovering how human societies connect with the natural world, engaging in fieldwork, laboratory exercises and work placements that give you essential hands-on experience. The accredited programme develops the geospatial, analytical and field skills that geography employers across multiple sectors look for, from environmental consultancy and data analysis to teaching and logistics. Geography graduates pursue careers in environmental consultancy, urban and regional planning, conservation management, sustainability and corporate social responsibility, data analysis and geographic information systems, international development, teaching, research and public policy. The combination of scientific literacy and social awareness that a dual human and physical geography degree develops is particularly valued in roles that span the environmental and social dimensions of complex problems. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in geography, environmental science, urban planning or related fields to develop specialist expertise.
