About this course

Geography is the discipline that asks how the physical world and human societies shape each other. It spans an extraordinary range of concerns: the forces that produce landscapes, the dynamics of climate systems, the patterns of urban growth and inequality, the politics of natural resources, the consequences of environmental change, and the cultural geographies of place and identity. This breadth is both the challenge and the strength of geography: it equips you to think across disciplinary boundaries and to connect scientific analysis with social understanding in ways that few other subjects allow. At Chester this four-year programme includes a foundation year, providing a preparatory stage before you enter the full degree. The programme is accredited by the Royal Geographical Society, reflecting its commitment to professional standards in geographical education. You will develop both physical and human geography skills, combining field investigation, quantitative data analysis, and geographical information systems with engagement in social, political, and environmental questions. Fieldwork is a central feature, taking you beyond the classroom to investigate real places and processes. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study geography in an international context and broaden your experience of different landscapes, cultures, and academic traditions. The skills geography develops are wide-ranging and genuinely transferable: spatial thinking, data literacy, environmental understanding, and the capacity to synthesise complex information across different scales and domains. Graduates work in environmental consultancy, urban and regional planning, conservation, government, international development, geographic information systems and spatial data analytics, education, and research. The Royal Geographical Society accreditation is recognised by employers in the sector. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, urban planning, or related fields.
