BSc Geography
About this course
Geography at Sheffield develops in you the analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills to understand the dynamic forces shaping our planet and to engage seriously with the challenge of the climate crisis. It combines the study of physical processes, including geomorphology, hydrology, climate science, and ecology, with human geography, including urban development, migration, inequality, and political economy, developing a genuinely integrative understanding of how the physical and human worlds interact. At the University of Sheffield, this three-year full-time programme is taught by world-leading researchers whose work on topics including climate change, environmental hazards, urban resilience, and development is directly reflected in the curriculum. You will undertake hands-on fieldwork and laboratory classes that give you the practical skills alongside the theoretical understanding. A foundation year is available for students who need additional preparation. A sandwich year places you in a professional environment for a sustained period, a year abroad deepens your experience of different geographical contexts, and work placement experience is integrated throughout the programme. Geography graduates from Sheffield are well regarded by employers across environmental consultancy, planning, international development, government, data analysis, and the third sector. The research quality of Sheffield's geography department also makes the degree an excellent preparation for postgraduate study and research careers in geography, climate science, environmental management, and urban planning. The combination of physical and human geography skills makes graduates unusually versatile, capable of contributing to both technical and policy-facing roles.
