BA Geography
About this course
Geography at the University of Gloucestershire takes a genuinely hands-on approach to one of the most interdisciplinary subjects available at degree level. The BSc Geography is a three-year full-time programme that places a strong emphasis on fieldwork and practical learning, with small class sizes that allow you to develop skills through direct engagement with physical and human geography landscapes and environments. As the current description notes, much of your time outside fieldwork will be spent in teaching laboratories covering both human and physical geography. Geography spans the natural and social sciences, and the degree develops your competence across both. Physical geography engages with the processes that shape the earth's surface: geomorphology, hydrology, climatology, ecology, and the interactions between these systems that produce the landscapes and environments we inhabit. Human geography examines how people organise themselves in space, how economic and social forces shape places and regions, and how human activity transforms environments in ways that create both opportunity and risk. The practical dimension of Gloucestershire's programme is a genuine strength: you will develop skills in geographical information systems, environmental monitoring, fieldwork data collection, and spatial analysis that are directly applicable in professional contexts. The small class sizes support the kind of close engagement with material and with tutors that develops real expertise. Geography graduates are notably versatile in the employment market. The combination of scientific skills, quantitative and spatial analysis, fieldwork experience, and social and policy awareness that geography develops is valued across a wide range of careers. Environmental consultancy, planning, GIS and spatial analysis, conservation, the public sector, teaching, research, and sustainability and climate-related roles are among the most common destinations. Some graduates move into data analysis, technology, or business roles where the quantitative and problem-solving skills the degree develops are directly applicable. Many go on to postgraduate study in geography, environmental science, planning, or related disciplines. Gloucestershire's emphasis on practical and field-based learning is particularly effective in producing graduates who are ready to work in applied environmental and geographical roles.
