BSc Geography (with Foundation Year)
About this course
Geography stands apart from most academic disciplines in its ambition to understand both the physical world and the human world, and the relationships between them. It asks how landscapes form, how climates change, how cities grow, how people and resources are distributed across space, and how all these processes interact. That breadth is what makes geography genuinely distinctive as a way of thinking about the world. At Nottingham Trent University this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year at the outset. The foundation year is designed to prepare you thoroughly for degree-level study, building the academic skills, scientific literacy, and contextual knowledge that will serve you across the full programme. It makes the geography degree accessible to students who have the curiosity and commitment but would benefit from a structured transition into higher education. In the main degree you will explore both human and physical geography, studying topics such as climate systems, geomorphology, urban development, population change, cultural landscapes, and environmental policy. Fieldwork is central to geographical education, and you will develop practical skills in data collection, mapping, and spatial analysis alongside your theoretical understanding. You will learn to bring quantitative and qualitative methods to bear on real geographical questions, and to communicate your findings clearly and precisely. Graduates of geography are among the most versatile in the graduate labour market, and employers across a wide range of sectors value the combination of analytical rigour, environmental awareness, and communication skills the degree develops. Careers span urban and regional planning, environmental consultancy, the civil service, international development, GIS and data analysis, journalism, education, and business. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, urban planning, or related fields.
