About this course
Geography occupies a uniquely broad position among the academic disciplines, connecting the physical sciences with the social sciences to understand the world at every scale, from the erosion of a single hillside to the global patterns of climate, migration, and economic development. Geographers study the Earth's landscapes, environments, and ecosystems alongside the human societies that inhabit and transform them, and they use fieldwork, data analysis, mapping, and theoretical frameworks to make sense of the relationships between places, people, and processes. At the University of Salford, this four-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year pathway, designed to build a strong grounding in geography and the essential study skills needed to succeed at degree level. This makes it an excellent choice for students who are motivated by the subject but need a more gradual transition into higher education. From there you will develop a greater understanding of the world around you, exploring climate change and its effects on people and places, the geography of cities and rural areas, environmental management, and the spatial dimensions of social and economic inequality. The degree develops skills in quantitative and qualitative methods, GIS, fieldwork, and research design. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement, giving you sustained professional experience in applied contexts such as environmental consultancy, planning, local government, or international development. The typical entry tariff is 88 UCAS points. Geography graduates are among the most versatile in the labour market. Environmental consultancy, urban planning, transport, civil service, international development, teaching, surveying, and data analysis are all fields where geography graduates are well represented. The combination of technical skills and conceptual breadth makes the degree an excellent foundation for postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, urban planning, or related disciplines.
