MA Geography with French
About this course
Geography is an unusually broad discipline, sitting at the boundary between the natural sciences and the social sciences and asking how the physical world and human society shape each other. It encompasses everything from the processes that form landscapes and drive climate to the politics of migration, urban development, environmental justice, and global economic inequality. Adding French to a geography degree gives you a second major intellectual and communicative resource, opening access to French-language scholarship, Francophone cultures, and the networks of international collaboration that geography increasingly requires. At the University of Dundee, the flexible structure of the geography programme allows you to specialise in human or physical geography, or to combine elements of both, while also studying French as a companion discipline. You will develop geographical methods including fieldwork, spatial analysis, and qualitative research, alongside language proficiency in French and engagement with Francophone cultural and political contexts. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study or work in a French-speaking country and to deepen both your linguistic competency and your geographical perspective. It runs over four years full-time. Graduates of geography with French programmes pursue careers in urban planning, environmental consultancy, international development, the civil service, education, geographic information systems, and research. The French language dimension opens additional pathways in diplomacy, international business, and organisations working across Francophone Africa, Europe, and beyond. Postgraduate routes in human geography, environmental science, development studies, or applied linguistics are also well suited to this combination.
