MA Geography/Philosophy
About this course
Geography and philosophy is a combination that might seem unexpected, but the two subjects address complementary dimensions of how we understand our place in the world. Geography studies the surface of the Earth as the site of human living and working, examining the variability of physical and human landscapes and the interrelationships that bind them, from coastal management and environmental hazards to migration, solidarity, and urban development. Philosophy asks the deepest questions about knowledge, reality, ethics, and human experience, equipping you with conceptual tools to engage rigorously with ideas that resist purely empirical approaches. At the University of Glasgow, this part-time degree draws on strong programmes in both geography and philosophy. The geography component develops your skills in qualitative and statistical data analysis, fieldwork, and independent research, preparing you to engage with the dynamic and ever-changing questions the subject addresses. Philosophy at Glasgow ranges across epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, political philosophy, and philosophy of mind, giving you both historical depth and engagement with current debates. A year abroad is available, broadening your academic and cultural horizons. Graduates from geography and philosophy programmes bring a distinctive combination of analytical precision, spatial awareness, and ethical reasoning to their careers. Many work in environmental policy, planning, sustainability, community development, research, journalism, the civil service, and education. The philosophical training adds particular value in any context requiring careful thinking about values, uncertainty, or the ethical dimensions of policy and decision-making. Postgraduate study in geography, philosophy, environmental ethics, or public policy is a natural continuation.
